A sea turtle’s journey begins when a female nests on a beach, burying a clutch of eggs in the sand. The temperature of the sand dictates whether the turtle will hatch to be male or female.
After roughly two months, hatchlings emerge and dash to the ocean, facing intense predation.
The "lost years" follow, where juveniles drift in oceanic currents and kelp beds visiting distant reefs to grow. Upon reaching sub-adulthood, they migrate to coastal feeding grounds. After decades, mature turtles return to their natal beaches—the very shore where they were born—to mate and nest. This incredible cycle repeats, though only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood.
